Texas Holdem Poker Tips
Up for discussion today are a few Texas Holdem poker tips set up to help put a few extra chips into your stack during a cash game, or protect you from losing unnecessary chips as well. These can also be applied for sit and go’s as well as tournaments, but for the most part they’re geared toward the grinder. For those unaware, the difference between a tournament and a cash game is you can get up whenever you want in a cash game whereas tournaments are played until someone has all the chips. All right, let’s get started.
1. When you’re playing against a player who is low on chips (also known as the short stack or short stacked) you do not want to be betting against them with rags on the turn or river. Don’t bluff a short stack if they’ve made it past the first two rounds of betting. You can raise pots pre-flop and you can raise on the flop but if they call your bet and you were just bluffing, its time to shift gears. If you’re raising a lot of pots pre-flop be prepared for them to move all in on you eventually. Sooner or later they’ll have to make the move, or get up and leave the table with their tail between their legs. You don’t want to be giving away chips to a desperate player. They’re more likely to move in with a middle pair on the flop than someone who has a healthy chip stack.
1.1 You can apply a similar strategy to the very tight player at the table. A tight player typically only plays premium hands so you want to avoid playing against them if they’re in the hand. You wouldn’t want to bet at someone holding aces with rags right? You can almost guarantee the tight player has something better than you if they’re betting. If they’re in the hand, fold. It’s much easier to let the blinds slice them away then try to recover chips you lost to them. A tight player cannot win pots if opponents won’t play against them. Very simple strategy.
2. Look out for slowplays. This is actually more common in very low limit games than anywhere else. The player will check and call your bets. There won’t be a check raise, just a check call. More than likely the player is slowplaying you. If it looks like a straight or flush is possible and you have someone check calling you on the flop and turn, chances are you’re beat.
3. If your opponent bets the flop or calls a raise on the flop then backpedals and checks on the turn with a flush or straight draw on the board, they’re more than likely on a draw. The board may look something like this – 3h 4h Jd. Your opponent bets the flop, or calls a raise on the flop, or re-raises on the flop, then checks the turn when it comes 8s. Your opponent is either drawing to the flush or straight draw more often than not. He’s hoping you won’t bet either so he doesn’t have to spend any more money trying to make his hand. If you check the turn in this case you’re giving him a free card to make his hand. The odds of catching a flush by the river on the flop is about 36%. For a straight its 32%. If it’s only for the turn or only for the river it’s down to 18% and 16%. Those odds change drastically. If you bet the turn you’ve now changed their odds to hit their hand and mathematically you’re making the correct play. Make them pay to try and river you.
3.1 The other possibility your opponent may be holding would be the middle pair on the board. They have a pair and are looking for either trips or two pair. Once again the odds would be against them if they had to call another bet on the turn. Always make your opponents pay to chase. Chasing drains bankrolls. The more an opponent has to chase, the sooner they’ll be out of money.
