Roulette – The Mathematics Behind Every Bet

The game of Roulette is as popular today as it was in the past. Gamblers play the game by betting on which number the ball would rest after the ball is spun on a wheel built on purpose. There are basically two kinds of Roulette wheel: the European and the American. The European wheel has 37 pockets numbered 0-36. In which case, the house edge is 2.7 %. The American wheel has 38 numbers because of the additional double zero (00). The house edge in American wheel is 5.3 % due to this extra number.

There are eleven different main types of bets a player can make at Roulette.

Single Number bets (Straight Up) A Single Number bet is made by placing the chips in one of the boxes marked by the symbol 1, 2… 36, 0 or 00. A single number bet, for example on 13, wins if the ball lands on 13 and loses otherwise. A winning single number bet is paid 35 to 1.

Two Number bets. (Split bets) A Two Number bet is made by placing the chips on a line separating two single numbers. The Split bet wins if the ball lands on any of the two selected number and loses otherwise. A winning Two number bet is paid 17 to 1.

Three Number bets (Trio) A Three Number bet is made by placing the chips on the intersecting point between 0, 1 and 2, 0, 2 and 00, and 00, 2, and 3. There are other twelve possible three number bets corresponding to the twelve three numbers rows. A Three Number bet wins if the ball lands on any of the three selected number and loses otherwise. A winning Three Number bet is paid 11 to 1.

Four Number bets (Square or Corners) A Four Number bet is made by placing the chips in the middle of the square formed by any of the four numbers. A Four Number bet wins if the ball lands on any of the four numbers selected and loses otherwise. A winning Four number bet is paid 8 to 1.

Five Number bets A Five Number bet is made by placing the chips on the outside intersection point of the lines on the numbers 1 and 0 or 3 and 00. A Five Number bet wins if the ball lands on any of the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, and loses otherwise. A winning Five Number bet is paid 6 to 1.

Six Number bets A Six Number bet is made by placing the chips at two adjoining rows, with the chip placed at the corresponding intersection, as if in between where two row bets would be placed. A Six Number bet wins if the ball lands on any of the six numbers selected and loses otherwise. A Six Number bet is paid 5 to 1.

Section bets A Section bet is made by placing the chips in one of the boxes marked by 1st 12, (1 to 12), 2nd 12, (13 to 24), or 3rd 12, (25 to 36). A Section bet wins if the ball lands on any of the 12 numbers selected and loses otherwise. A Section bet is paid 2 to 1.

Column bets A Column bet is made by placing the chips in one of the boxes marked by 1st, 2nd or 3rd. A Column bet wins if the ball lands on any of 12 numbers of the column and loses otherwise. A winning Column bet is paid 2 to 1.

Red or Black bets A Red or Black bet is made by placing the chips on the box marked Red or Black. A Red bet wins if the ball lands on the pocket with a red background and loses otherwise. A bet on Black wins and loses in similar way. A winning Red or Black bet is paid 1 to 1.

Even or Odd bets An Even or Odd bet is made by placing the chips on the box marked EVEN or ODD. An Even bet wins if the ball lands on an even number and loses otherwise. A bet on Odd wins and loses in similar way. An Even or Odd bet is paid 1 to 1.

1 to 18 bets or 19 to 36 bets A 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 bet is made by placing the chips on the box marked 1 to 18 or 19 to 36. A bet on 1 to 18 wins if the ball lands on any of the numbers 1 to 18 and loses otherwise. A bet on 19 to 36 wins and loses in similar way. A winning 1 to 18 or 19 to 36 bet is paid 1 to 1.

Roulette is a casino game falling under what mathematicians call as “independent trial processes” category. This simply means that in the game, the previous spins can in no way influence the result of the next spin. A lot of gamblers fall into the trap of believing that since the ball had landed on black for already three in a row, then the ball is likely to land in red in the next. This is not so since the ball doesn’t have a memory.
